10 Timeless Bridal Hair and Makeup Styles from Beauty Expert Candy Tiong

Let’s talk bridal beauty, lovelies! We're delighted to have had the chance to sit down for a fireside chat with Singapore-based professional hair and makeup artist Candy Tiong who has over a decade of experience, and we asked her to share her top 10 timeless wedding hair and makeup styles to get you looking radiant for your big day!

Candy: I believe bridal makeup should be about creating flawless skin while gently enhancing a bride’s natural features. Her hairstyle should compliment the look, as well as the gown and overall theme of the wedding. The end result should be natural, yet stunning, showing off the bride at her very best.

Here are some of my favourite bridal hair and makeup styles which are absolutely timeless, to help you decide on a look for the big day!

Bridal Makeup...

1. Subtle

My favourite style is natural with subtle eye-makeup and flawless skin achieved through meticulous foundation application and facial contouring. I love to match this look with a classic chignon. Perfect makeup is not about the latest trend or look, rather it should bring out your best.

2. Oriental

Classic oriental makeup and hair can be tricky as it sometimes makes the bride look more mature than she really is. Here, I gave Genevieve deep, smokey eyes and red lips. For her hair, a modern soft French braided chignon with matching accessories.

3. Au Naturel

For a bride who wants light and natural makeup for daytime, I use light coverage liquid foundation and compact finishing powder to create a flawless look. The bride can then opt for single strand faux lashes for an enhanced natural lash effect. For the groom, make up is kept simple with light powdering, shaping of the eyebrows and a dusting of bronzer. Makeup for the grroom usually focuses on making him look polished and not at all over-the-top.

4. Dramatic

Evening makeup usually requires deeper shades of eye-shadow, with a slightly more prominent display of colours and contouring. The smokey eye effect often suits evening lighting best. Tip: Be adventurous and try double layer faux lashes for more dramatic effect.

Bridal Hair...

5. Romantic

A loose, side pin-up curl hair style matches most types of wedding gowns well. Tip: Curls usually last for 2 – 4 hours depending on bride’s hair texture. Therefore, a trial is recommended to gauge how long the curls will hold.

6. Princess Bride

A timeless style which I personally adore is French braided on the top with soft, big curls at the bottom to complete the look. This style is best matched with a strapless or off-shoulder gown.

8. Classic

My all-time-favourite is the classic French-twist chignon. This classy look brings out the elegance of every bride and matches any type of gown. The chignon can be styled in loose curls, braids or a neat bun and is timeless.

9. Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers settle beautifully on most hairstyles and are recommended for daytime wedding looks. Tip: Request for additional flowers from your florist to match your hand bouquet (small blooms work best).

10. Glamourous

This chic side chignon hairdo, with smokey-eyes and red lips, is perfect for an evening wedding. A loosely-tied side chignon can be gorgeous too. Tip: Loose hairstyles are most suitable for indoor events.

Some final words of advice from Candy…
To look your absolute best, remember to rest and hydrate well. The night before the wedding, after showering and blow drying, skin should be hydrated with your usual facial mask and you should also drink more water and sleep early. Nothing beats a bride with glowing, radiant skin. You’ll be surprised at how much magic ample rest and water can do for your skin overnight!

When deciding on a makeup artist, take time to look through their portfolios, find out about the services and packages they offer and read reviews and testimonials to know what others think of their style and skill. Once you are confident that you have formed an educated opinion, it is always good to go for a trial session to verify your choice before the wedding. Don’t be shy to get in touch with the make up artist to clear any doubts.
