Today's pre-wedding feature is guaranteed to give you major wanderlust. Enamoured with her fiancée's photographic style, Wendy managed to convince Daniel (of Daniel Beh Photography) that they could shoot their engagement photos themselves! Wide angle photography and vast landscapes proved to be a great match as the couple satiated their appetite for adventure by traveling to exotic and amazingly photogenic locations in New Zealand and the US, such as Monument Valley and Antelope Canyon.
How did you meet?
"We met at a wedding 6 years ago, and what is really interesting is that Wendy made the first move. We hung out for a while and found that both of us really clicked. We have many similar interests in areas such as food and travel.
As a wedding photographer and flight attendant, we work rather odd hours and most times our weekends are booked. But we actually find plenty of time to go out on dates during weekdays.
If we only had a place to stay, we probably would have gotten hitched years back; but, all things in good time. Actually, all the wedding stuff started rolling in as soon we bought our place. We thought, ‘Hey, it’s time to settle down!'” ~ Daniel
What was the inspiration behind your shoot?
"We wanted to do a pre-wedding shoot, so we talked to a number of Daniel’s photographer friends but I found that I love his photos most! So I cracked a joke and told him, 'Let’s do it ourselves!'. After making sure that this was in fact doable, the spontaneity in us took over, and the rest is history.
The plan was to travel around whilst taking our own pre-wedding photos. It was an excuse for us really, because we love to travel, and we made it our little project for our new place as well. So not only did Daniel get to take his photography to a whole new level, I also got the chance to apply my make-up and hair styling skills from work, and we had ourselves a grand adventure. Everyone’s happy!
A like-minded friend that we made during our trip said (and we can’t say it any better): 'They love to travel, so now when they do, they take their gear along, get dressed, and take some photos!'.
Choosing the gown was quite effortless actually. After our designer Minda let me try on a few gowns, Daniel immediately knew that this was the one. The gown complimented the locations we intended for the shoot, which were very vast and out-of-this-world landscapes." ~ Wendy
Tell us more about your epic adventure!
"We went to New Zealand in April 2014, and to the US in July-August 2014. In the US, we snapped our photos in San Francisco, Monument Valley and Antelope Canyon.
Monument Valley was interesting because of all the sandstone buttes. It truly looks like an out-of-this-world landscape with its orangey red sand. To avoid the hot summer midday and get the perfect light, we started the shoot at 5:30am!
Antelope Canyon was especially memorable. Despite wearing Silhouette The Atelier’s fluffy gown, Wendy managed to climb up and down the steep stairs in the canyon, and she successfully navigated through some very narrow canyon walls. We received a lot of well-wishes, requests for photos, and got lots of attention. In fact, so much so that the guides in the canyons kept following us around during the shoot as they were so intrigued and amazed - they even gave us tips on where the best parts of the canyon are for photos! They said there are only a handful of weddings and photo shoots held in Antelope Canyon, but they had never encountered a couple who shot their own engagement photos there." ~ Daniel
Thank you for sharing your scenic engagement shoot with us, Daniel and Wendy!
