Hongkongers Bill and Heather set their hearts on a destination wedding in Phuket after holidaying there in the early stages of their courtship. The self-professed cat lovers engaged Phuket-based wedding planner Wedding Boutique Phuket to organise their big day (they said it was “love at first meow”), with photography by Chang from Wedding Photographer Phuket and videography by Wedding Films Thailand.
Every little detail of the couple’s intimate outdoor wedding ceremony in Aleenta Phuket Resort & Spa’s luxurious four-bedroom beach villa reflected their love for furry felines. The wedding bands came stacked on the long tail of a cat-shaped ring holder; there was a cat-shaped silhouette cut-out declaring “Getting meow-ied here!” as part of the décor set-up; the wedding cake sported adorable whiskers and pointy ears; and the bride wore cat-shaped pearl earrings. The best part? A ginger-haired kitten also made a cameo appearance!
How did the two of you meet?
“We met at work and got to know each other at the company’s annual party.” ~ Bill and Heather
How did Bill propose?
“He proposed in a park in Japan while we were sitting on a bench eating cheese rings. I had put one cheese ring around my finger, and he suddenly took out the ring and said, “How about I give you a real ring?”” ~ Heather
What made you decide on a destination wedding?
“We were never fans of hotel weddings and always wanted an outdoor wedding with a good view, which is not easy to find in Hong Kong. We both wanted to celebrate the day with close friends and family only in a cheerful atmosphere, be able to talk to every guest during the day, and make the day memorable for both ourselves and the guests. Plus, a lawn facing the ocean is the wedding venue that I have always dreamed about.” ~ Heather
Why did you choose Phuket as the location for your wedding?
“We visited Phuket when we had just started dating for a while, and liked the hospitality of the people there. Bill had an accident while doing water sports and stayed at a local hospital for a few days. However, that experience brought us closer to each other, and we wanted to re-visit Phuket again to finish our journey.” ~ Heather
What was the theme/style/colour palette of your wedding?
“We wanted to include warm and vivid colours in a natural landscape. Ilaire (from Wedding Boutique Phuket) proposed a very nice colour palette with a lot of greenery, natural wood and hints of peach and yellow. Beautiful!
Wedding Boutique Phuket also found many nice décor items featuring cats, together with natural, rustic and retro items. We also looked for cat-themed items in Hong Kong, and a friend of ours designed our invitations by illustrating the characters of two of our three cats, which was simply amazing! Even the cake and the dessert bites were in the shape of a cat and paws.” ~ Bill and Heather
What were some unique design and décor elements at your wedding?
“The "loop of love" was something recurring in our wedding theme. The altar was a simple wooden structure decorated with ivy, as well as hanging loops in mixed sizes decorated with flowers. We loved how Wedding Boutique Phuket designed and set up this altar for us!
It wasn’t just the altar and bridesmaids bouquets that were loops. The dinner menu had a circular design and was hanging over the bar. The dinner table was U-shaped because we wanted our intimate group of guests to be well connected during the reception. Jars of fresh flowers and greenery runners with leaves and fresh fruit together with candlelights were our beautiful decorations for dinner.
We also wanted to include something organic and tropical, so fresh fruit was placed along the aisle and on the sides together with wooden boxes, slabs and wax candles.
As mentioned, everything was "cat inspired", and that included the guestbook and the seating chart. We pinned some Polaroid photos of our three cats on the seating chart in order to feel that they were closer to us on the Big Day!” ~ Bill and Heather
Was there one particular moment that was very special to you?
“After setting off the lanterns, we were overcome with emotion. We felt so happy and that all the time and effort we spent on the wedding was worth it.” ~ Bill and Heather
Any tips or wedding advice for other brides and grooms-to-be?
“Planning a destination wedding was not easy due to distance. We were initially anxious and afraid that it would rain on the day but at the beginning of the event all the stress went out in a breath! Relax and don’t try to do everything by yourself, rely on a good wedding planner and everything will be perfect!” ~ Bill and Heather
Congratulations on your marriage, Bill and Heather! May it be every bit as beautiful as your wedding!
