Chia Ern and Evelyn’s Penang Proposal at 32 Mansion

He understands me very well and accepts me for who I am. I am ‘me’ when I’m with him.” ~ Evelyn

Evelyn did not hesitate to say “Yes, I will marry you” when she saw her shy partner Chia Ern go down on one knee in public because just by that gesture alone, she knew he would go to any lengths to make her happy. Factor in that Chia Ern also arranged for her favourite things to be present during the marriage proposal at 32 Mansion, Penang, including photographer Amelia Soo, a violinist, fairy lights and fireworks, and you know it was a recipe for success.

Please tell us a little bit about how you both got together and how did you know he/she was THE ONE?
We were university mates, but we met each other through attending the same church. In terms of character, both of us are very different. Chia Ern is very reserved and introverted whereas Evelyn is an extrovert who is full of joy and happiness.” ~ Chia Ern and Evelyn

We started out as friends but Evelyn friend-zoned me from the start as she assumed I was not her cup of tea. But I didn’t give up. I literally spent half a year going after her with perseverance, as I knew Evelyn was the type of girl I would like to be with for the rest of my life. Maybe it’s her character which attracted me.” ~ Chia Ern

The moment when I knew he was the one was when he asked me to be his girlfriend. The fact that he had spent half a year to get me by hook or by crook, I could feel his sincerity and dedication towards me. I was very touched by his ‘hard work’. If you ever watched the Korean movie ‘My Sassy Girl’, I’m kind of the main character, and Chia Ern was the only one who could stand me, well, up till now.” ~ Evelyn

What do you love most about your partner?
Evelyn is very childish in a way but when it comes to real business/matters, she is very serious, I respect her for that. She always brings joy to the people around her and is able to make me laugh and smile.” ~ Chia Ern

He understands me very well and accepts me for who I am. I am ‘me’ when I’m with him. He’s firm but loving.” ~ Evelyn

When did you decide to propose and what planning was involved?
The decision to propose came about half a year ago. As for the real planning, it was two months before. I started out by texting Amelia Soo, Evelyn’s favourite photographer and friend because for Evelyn, photographs are the most important thing of all.

Then I hired the people behind Rent A Space and What A Bash to suggest the proposal location, decoration details and flow of the proposal. In short, I chose all of her favourite things - her favourite violinist, photographer, a location with fairy lights, and also fireworks.

I felt that a proposal in Penang would be better because she wouldn’t be suspicious as she comes to visit me almost every month from Miri. And oh, did I mention we were in a long-distance relationship for seven years? It was easy for me to liaise with Amelia to help me to trick and bring Evelyn to the proposal spot without her suspecting.” ~ Chia Ern

Evelyn, was the proposal a complete surprise or did you have an inkling as to what your fiancé was planning? Could you please tell us a little bit about how you felt during the actual proposal?
Yes, it was a total surprise. I thought it was a normal catch up session with Amelia until she brought me to 32 Mansion then I started to feel something was odd. When the waiter served me with a different kind of ‘menu’ (Chia Ern had handmade our memories into a photo book), it was then that I realised what was happening. I almost teared up while looking through our ‘menu’. Then Amelia lead me to the spot where Chia Ern was waiting for me. I burst into laughter when he knelt down because I knew it’s very tough for him to do this publicly especially since he is an extremely shy guy! But to be honest, the moment I saw him kneeling down, my heart already had the answer - I WILL. This was the sincerity I mentioned earlier, that he will do whatever it takes to make me happy. It was like travelling back to our first date. I am so blessed to have met a man like him. For me, sincerity means the most!” ~ Evelyn

Chia Ern, how do you feel after the proposal and do you have any tips or advice for other couples planning to propose?
I’d never felt the importance of marriage before this, but after the proposal, I felt so secure. I guess there’s really a difference between a girlfriend and a wife because now your girlfriend has finally become your ‘secured’ wife and she will love you more than ever, I think.

As for tips, I would have done all the planning and the set-up by myself if I had time. I did all this before when I asked her to be my girlfriend seven years ago without a wedding planner, however due to work and time constraints, I could not execute the proposal by myself. I think it’s better to let your partner have a sincere and heartfelt proposal. If time permits, plan and do it by yourself. She will definitely feel and ‘buy’ into it!” ~ Chia Ern

How did you find the ring?
I’ve always known Evelyn’s favourite brands of jewellery, so I had no problem choosing it.” ~ Chia Ern
