Old-school sweets, punchy citrus hues, and a rustic outdoor setting — this wedding has all of it and more! DIY-loving couple Desmond and Lay Peng, together with their wedding planner Michelle Poh from Hitched Weddings & Parties, created a cozy backyard garden wedding at Burkill Hall, Singapore Botanic Gardens, captured by Samantha from Lightedpixels Pixies. This coral and mint-infused celebration (complete with gold sprinkled fig-topped cake) will leave you smitten!
How did you meet?
“We were from the same polytechnic and were both committee members in the school’s academic club. I didn’t like him at first, but we eventually got the chance to know each other more!” ~ Lay Peng
How did he propose?
“He came to pick me up after I had attended my friend’s wedding at Sentosa’s One°15. He then brought me to one of the beaches afterwards and I found it hilarious, as I knew straightaway that he was going to propose after he asked me to put on a blindfold! While we were at the beach (and in the dark!), he showed me a video that he had made himself and after it ended, he kneeled down to propose.
I later found out that while prepping for the proposal, Desmond was approached by the lifeguards when he was lighting up the candles but was let off when they realized that it was a proposal. Too bad that the candles never did light up as the wind was too strong!” ~ Lay Peng
We love the colours in your wedding! What was the theme?
“We had a rustic wedding with a coral and mint colour palette.” ~ Lay Peng
How did you decorate your venues?
“We got our wedding planner Michelle to help us with the decoration based on what we had in mind for the colours, flowers and the overall theme. We wanted the unique wedding venue to be fun and interactive, so it was decorated with our photo displays, a Polaroid booth and an old school snack area.
We designed the logo ourselves and chose the fabric for our wedding favours, as well as the stamps for tags and invitations. Even our angbao box was made from scratch! We also packed the snack jars and made the drinks (lemonade with rosemary and grape cordial with raspberries) ourselves!” ~ Lay Peng
Wow, that’s a lot of DIY! How did you settle on the wedding favours?
“While Desmond was working in South Africa, he got me some lavender satchels from a lavender farm and they smelled great! Sometime after, we went there for holiday and fell in love with the place, so we wanted to give our guests something unique from a place we both love.” ~ Lay Peng
Any tips or wedding advice do you have for other brides and grooms to be?
“Always plan and get things done way in advance! We started planning one and a half years ahead and we were pretty much completely relaxed closer to the date!
And get a wedding planner if you’re as busy as we are! Michelle really helped us save a lot time and effort in thinking about what to get for our wedding (which was almost everything!). But having said that, still try to be involved in the planning process! Michelle got us multiple quotations for every item on our list but we made sure to source a few more ourselves to have a better comparison. It not only benefited us as we discovered new things, and saved some of the cost, but it also provided Michelle with more contacts for her future use. It’s a win-win situation!” ~ Lay Peng
What do you think makes a strong marriage?
“Although it’s a cliché to say this, always be open to communication; it’s important to be able to talk things through and compromise. It can be difficult to talk after an argument, but try to get through to each other and understand each other’s thoughts.” ~ Lay Peng
Congratulations on your marriage, Desmond and Lay Peng! May it be every bit as beautiful as your wedding!
