We never thought a grand ballroom would suit a rustic chic theme but Edric and Xuezhen have opened our eyes. Having spent some of the most memorable days of their courtship at Sentosa, holding their nuptials on the island’s Capella hotel was an easy decision. Samuel Goh Photography captured the happy occasion as this creative duo's DIY-filled (think marquee lights, IKEA curtain backdrops and wine bottle menus) solemnisation and dinner banquet made for a celebration that was uniquely their own.
How did you meet?
“We met during our JC days at a barbeque.” ~ Edric and Xuezhen
How did he propose?
“We both love the sun and the sea so Edric rented a yacht for a day trip where we sailed and visited the nearby islands. Towards the end of the day during sunset, we anchored the yacht and he proposed.” ~ Xuezhen
What was your theme and colour palette?
“We didn’t really have a particular theme. We believe that a wedding should reflect the couple; the styling was based on stuff we like – plants, the beach and DIY crafts.” ~ Edric and Xuezhen
How did you decorate your venues? Did you undertake any DIY projects?
“Yes, lots of it! We hold jobs in the creative industry and really enjoy the process of creating. It is this process that made the entire wedding planning memorable. We did the ‘X’ & ‘E’ marquee letters, the backdrops for the stage and photo booth. We also crafted the photo booth props, sewed buntings, customised message cards and strung up our logo with twine and foliage. We collected twigs during a random walk after supper to decorate the red packet box, and DIY-ed everything on the reception and message desks. Xuezhen and her bridesmaids had a fun session making the bridesmaid bouquets, bouquets for gifting and groomsmen boutonnières.
In order to save some money, we also looked at reusing some items that we already had; picnic baskets, photo frames, jars and bottles etc. We had a jar of seashells that we’d collected at beaches we’ve visited all around the world – we simply purchased an anchor for it and that became our ring holder. We enjoy frequenting Ikea – the curtains for the photo booth and stage backdrops were purchased from there! Some of these items can actually be used in our future home!” ~ Edric
What sort of wedding favors did you opt for, and why?
“We opted for luggage tags from Capella. They looked really sleek and we felt they were the most functional wedding favours. We wanted to use them ourselves as well!” ~ Edric and Xuezhen
Do you have any interesting moments or stories to share from the wedding?
“Both of us wanted a wedding that reflected who we are, what we love and what it means for us to be a couple. Being a music producer and an architectural designer, it was important for our wedding to be meaningful and unique to the both of us. We had a lot of fun creating our wedding video. Edric composed and produced the music that we danced to.
The dance was choreographed by Xuezhen, who has enjoyed dancing for as long as she can remember. We love this quote by Steffi Carter, ‘Because when a dancer falls in love with you, she falls in love with the music you make.’
Sentosa holds uncountable memories for us; it was where we had our first date trekking through the old Imbiah Walk. We’ve spent numerous hours lazing at the beach, celebrated birthdays and special occasions, ate and watched the sun set at our favorite café by the beach, and even planned our wedding there.
Naturally, we wanted to be back on the island for our wedding. We wanted to be at the beach to say our vows to each other. It was a pity that it started raining just before the ceremony began. Nonetheless, we were lucky to have a few moments at the beach before the ceremony started! We both love plants and being outdoors and were blown away by the lush greenery and calming vibe that Capella offered. Even though we wanted our wedding to be intimate and cosy, our families are huge and we ended up taking the grand ballroom. The challenge was for us to create the relaxed and intimate mood that we had originally wanted.
We requested Capella to have fun with the floral arrangements by doing away with formal floral arrangements, and instead have random flowers in a variety of bottles and ferns and foliage laid on the table. We kept the skylight above the ballroom open to fill the ballroom with natural light, bringing a little of the outdoors inside. The menus were stuck onto the wine bottles that we collected. We also DIY-ed the table numbers and table place cards so that everything looked less formal. We are really thankful to Capella for being open to our ideas and the help rendered in creating the beautiful setting for our wedding.
During the lunch, we did away with the formal toasting ceremonies and had friends share a few thoughts on stage. We are thankful to have had friends with good vocal chords sing for everyone. We had a pancake stack instead of a tiered cake right after our solemnisation so that we could get to eat the pancake as our breakfast!” ~ Edric and Xuezhen
Do you have any tips and wedding advice for other brides and grooms-to-be?
“The whole wedding planning process will happen very fast and things can get really crazy. It's important to have each other’s back at all times and have faith that you will get through it together!
Don’t get too caught up with all the pretty images or mood boards that you find – the images will be neverending. It helped for us to sit down together and envision the actual wedding day and what would reflect us a couple. After all, a wedding is a union of two unique individuals. Just have fun and enjoy the process together!” ~ Edric and Xuezhen
What do you think makes a strong marriage?
“Food. Good food.” ~ Edric and Xuezhen
