Gabriel initially planned to propose to Singapore influencer Elaine Jasmine/Rui Min (@elaineruimin) overseas but changed his mind when he realised he wanted their families and close friends to be a part of it. His proposal captured by Samuel Goh Photography, planned by Holy Moly, and filmed by AndroidsinBoots is how Elaine eventually came to consider herself “the happiest girl in the whole wide world”.
“After walking through the woods, as he walked me down a path blindfolded, I felt so grateful. As I was blindfolded, all I could think about was how blessed I was to have met a man like Gabe and how undeserving I was to be so loved by someone so amazing. Then when he finally lifted the blindfold and popped the question in front of the people that mattered most to me, I felt in love with him like never before. I felt like the happiest girl in the whole wide world.” ~ Elaine
Please tell us a little bit about how you both got together and how did you know he/she was THE ONE?
“We were fortunate to meet each other in hall back in college. Gabe was part of the senior planning committee of the hall camp, which Elaine participated in as a freshie. Things got spicier when every junior had to ask a senior out on date night, something that Elaine dreaded doing initially as she thought the dating game was “lame”. Haha!
However, after much encouragement from other seniors and her orientation group members, she decided to “woo” Gabe for date night as he appeared to be quite an interesting and friendly person and she wanted to get to know him better as a friend. Once she decided on Gabe, she ended up baking for him, decorating his room door and even sewing him a teddy bear because she got competitive as there were other girls trying to “woo” him for date night as well (not because she liked him then, but because she was competitive and didn’t’ want to lose to the other girls. Hahah!) In the end, Gabe ended up picking Elaine as his date for date night and rejected the other girls. That night, he surprised Elaine by filling her entire room with paper hearts, something that melted Elaine’s heart each night before she slept for that semester.
It was through the dating game that both of them started talking and from there, a close friendship was formed. They fell in love as they texted and hung out the next few months, and got together a year after the dating game.” ~ Gabe and Elaine
What do you love most about your partner?
“I love Elaine because she has been my greatest support since she entered my life. I knew she was the one when she waited patiently for me to return home from exchange and the many nights she stayed up late to accompany me as I worked. I love that although we share different dreams, we motivate each other to achieve them. Our differences complement each other and she’s never shy about me in public.” ~ Gabe
“There are so many things I love about Gabe. If I had to pick one, it would be his sincerity. I love that he’s sincere about loving me and taking care of me. I love that he’s sincere in being filial and caring for his parents.” ~ Elaine
When did you decide to propose and what planning was involved?
“Initially I was planning to propose overseas. I had actually already pre-booked a surprise trip for the proposal. However, after much thought, I felt that a proposal in Singapore would be better so that her family and close friends could witness our special moment. I also wanted my family, particularly my grandmother, to be there when I finally popped the question to the girl of my dreams. In addition, I knew Elaine wanted her proposal to be documented for memories as she’s someone who likes to re-watch her videos and photos to relive her best moments in life. We have our favourite production team here and so it was more convenient to have it held in Singapore.
As for planning, Elaine was quite busy travelling during that period, which allowed me to plan the proposal. I eventually proposed during our 6th year anniversary celebration. It was too late to cancel the surprise trip, hence it became our proposal-moon.
I met up with Samuel Goh, Elaine’s favourite wedding photographer, who recommended Chelsea from Holy Moly who helped with the decoration details and flow of the proposal. I also requested Jessica from AndroidsinBoots to be on the team as well, knowing how well Elaine enjoyed working with Jess for videos. Together, we then thought about the proposal idea and the venue. All of this took place 2 months prior to the proposal.” ~ Gabe
Elaine, was the proposal a complete surprise or did you have an inkling as to what Gabriel was planning? Could you please tell us a little bit about how you felt during the actual proposal?
“Yes, it was a complete surprise! I did not expect a proposal at all as I was too focused on finding out the travel destination of his surprise trip for me! A few months back, I accidentally caught him trying to book flight tickets and after much persuasion, he reluctantly admitted to me he was in the midst of planning a surprise trip. He deliberately left the location unknown to create suspense and he did it successfully as I spent weeks bugging him nonstop on where he was planning to take me. He promised to reveal the destination on our 6th year anniversary. As such, the entire week, I was just looking forward to finding out where we were flying so I could go about planning the itinerary and my outfits for the trip. Who knew he was going to propose! I was completely taken by surprise.
As for how I felt during the actual proposal, there was a whole whirlwind of emotions going through me. I was shocked at first because I was not expecting a proposal at all. After the shock, I felt touched, because as he was walking me through the woods, he was reminding me of the past 6 years of memories we had together. I was also touched because Gabe isn’t usually a romantic person and for him to come up with such a perfect, perfect moment — I knew he was serious in asking me to marry him. After walking through the woods, as he walked me down a path blindfolded, I felt so grateful.
Gabriel, how do you feel after the proposal and do you have any tips or advice for other couples planning to propose?
“A perfect proposal should be sincere and heartfelt. It can be simple but should be planned early. Rehearse your script ample times, even though you will eventually forget it during the actual moment. Haha!” ~ Gabe
How did you find the ring?
“We were joking about our engagement last year. Subsequently, during one of our dates, we ended up in a jewellery shop trying to understand the different aspects of a ring. It was at this moment that I took the chance to understand her expectations and size of her desired ring. In the end, we chose a humble ring that we felt best represented our simple relationship.” ~ Gabe
“I love it! To be honest, I’m not someone who chases after diamonds and I didn’t want Gabe to spend too much money on a huge diamond ring. That’s why I chose a simple ring as I felt it was one I could wear every day, and it best represented our simple relationship that I love. Gabe bought the exact ring I wanted and it’s perfect for me.” ~ Elaine
