Elyas and Qila knew they would one day wed from the moment they got together; their nikah (or solemnisation) at Acappella Suite Hotel, Shah Alam was styled by The Calla and captured by Weddings by Qay. The bride and founder of Que Qollection dressed her entire wedding party for the occasion, and we especially love the fringe details on her lace dress! Read on to learn more about this couple’s adorable love story.
How did you meet?
“We both grew up in the small city of Shah Alam — I was in Section 9 and he was in Section 7. Although we went to different schools, we knew of one another because of mutual friends. In fact, he tried to get me to go out with him once, but I refused simply because I wasn’t interested then.
In 2009, I became obsessed with Mafia Wars, a multiplayer social network game on Myspace. I would play it everyday after school. During the exam period, my parents banned me from going on the Internet until I had finished my papers (oh, those were the days!). I was frantic because I couldn’t ‘heal’ my character while I was offline, but I returned a week later to find that she was perfectly fine. I knew that someone must have been healing my character during that period – and lo and behold, it was my (now) husband! My heart dropped the moment I found out it was him; I guess he never gave up on me even after I rejected him the first time. Being the well-mannered lady I am, I thanked him, and our love story went on for 8 years until we finally tied the knot on the 1st of July, 2017.” ~ Qila
How did he propose?
“Back in 2009, I was a member of my school’s end-of-the-year party committee. Elyas decided to crash the party to ask me to take a walk with him to the golf course next to the clubhouse for ‘some fresh air’, at least that’s what he said. It was super weird because he was properly dressed in a suit and looking nervous. After a few minutes, we stopped at these steps and out of the blue, he took my hand and got down on one knee. I was obviously shocked! He took out a little note from his pocket and read his very lengthy vows to me. He ended it by asking ‘Will you spend the rest of your life with me?’ I laughed and said ‘no’ because I thought it was super funny (I was 17!). He got up and gave me a necklace with a pendant of my initial. I saw that he was holding something in his other hand, and asked him what it was. He said, ‘It’s an ‘E’ pendant necklace. If you said yes, I thought we could exchange our initials to make it official.’ I felt so bad for saying no (even if I was kidding); I took his hands in mine and said yes! I didn’t think that he would put in so much effort just to ask me to be his girlfriend, but to this day it’s one of the sweetest things that he’s ever done for me. So, to answer your question, he basically he proposed to me when we first got together. We didn’t know when we would get married, but even back then we definitely know that we would some day.” ~ Qila
What was the theme of your wedding?
“Our theme was inspired by ‘The Great Gatsby’, but instead of the usual black and gold, we chose a colour palette that consisted of white, green and gold. I put together a file showing what I had in mind, and The Calla took care of everything.” ~ Qila
Did you undertake any DIY projects?
“Que Qollection is my own label, so I did my entire wedding, including my bridesmaids’ and family’s dresses.
For our wedding favours, my mom and I stuffed Hershey’s Kisses into small burlap bags and added large diamond brooches on top of them.” ~ Qila
Any tips or wedding advice for other brides and grooms-to-be?
“1. Make an effort to include your family and your partner in the planning process and enjoy it every step of the way.
2. Always check your budget.
3. Plan early. There’s no such thing as being ‘too early’ to start preparing!
4. Get enough rest.
5. Get help instead of attempting to do everything on your own (I learned this the hard way).” ~ Qila
What do you think makes a strong marriage?
“It’s probably too early for us to share our thoughts on marriage, seeing as we’ve only been married for 5 months. However, we have been together as a couple for 8 years, and we think the secret to long-lasting relationships is being true to one another and yourselves. You can only trust each other fully once you burn the walls that stand between you and your partner, and if you can’t do that, it means you’re not 100% committed.” ~ Qila
Congratulations on your marriage, Elyas and Qila! May it be every bit as beautiful as your wedding!
