We are so excited to be bringing you our first ever feature for a brand new section of the Blog called, “Beyond Weddings”. It’s been over a year since we started this journey, and many of the couples we met have since had little bundles of joy, making it the perfect time for us to commemorate the grand occasion of new life. Our first couple to be featured in this section, Sam and Brenda (whose beautiful wedding we featured last year), wants to give their children a gift like no other: the gift of memories. In order to do that, they enlisted the aid of photographer friend Ting from Ksana, as well as Brenda’s cousin Dianne, of event styling company To The Drawing Room. The big gender reveal involved a larger-than-life mystery box, and the couple had nothing but absolute joy and love for their soon-to-be baby. In Brenda’s own words, “Nothing clinical. Everything magical.”
A word from Brenda…
“I grew up wanting to give my kids the kind of gifts that lasted beyond a season or a social trend. Something that wasn’t materialistic or meant to replace a parent’s love or attention but rather, something that embodies them.
So, I chose to endeavour to create memories for them. And what better time to do this than from the beginning – wouldn’t it be nice for them to know how we felt the moment we found out if it was a little girl or little boy?
The medium? I knew that hands down, I wanted nothing less than photography, so we decided to do a Gender Reveal photo moment with our good friends, Ting from Ksana and Samuel from Samuel Goh Photography.
There was some planning involved in this, of course. At our 15-week detailed scan, we told our sonographer NOT to reveal the baby’s gender to us. Instead, with a cheeky smile, she wrote the words onto a card and slipped that into an enclosed envelope. I passed the envelope to my cousin Dianne (who styled my wedding and has her own event-styling company called ‘To the Drawing Room’) and she, along with my sister Rachel and her fiancé Kheng Wei, prepared the props for the photography session.
I had NO idea what was going to happen at the gender reveal session, but the anticipation and eagerness made the whole process even more enjoyable. These three musketeers (who by that time knew whether I was having a little girl or boy) lugged a HUGE box that said 'It’s a…' to the Bukit Timah railway tracks for the shoot. It was revealed to us that inside the box were either blue or pink helium balloons. You get the picture.
By that time, my husband and I were dying to find out. We just wanted to rip the box apart. But those three prolonged our agony by making us play a guessing game with mini chalkboards. I felt that I was having a baby girl, while Sam (my husband) felt otherwise. There were lots of laughter and love in those few precious moments as Ting and Samuel (Ting’s boyfriend) began clicking away with their cameras.
But the moment came when Sam and I finally got to pull the ribbons of the box and out flew those light pink balloons. My heart leapt with joy. I was going to have my very own, homemade girlfriend! Sam started laughing and we just hugged each other in absolute excitement and joy. This little girl was not just ours, but God’s, and at that moment we felt so overwhelmingly blessed. It was also nice to have my family and close friends join us as we shared that happy moment. Nothing clinical. Everything magical.”
A word from Ting...
"I've been deeply inspired by Brenda and Samuel and their close ones, since I photographed their wedding a year and a half ago. These two people gave me a new definition of a life that is rich. I was simply moved by how they appreciate the small things in life that most of us may neglect, and I simply love the way they spend time to create positive memories, to celebrate, to remember and to cherish.
Nothing beats the feeling of pure joy that arises within when being surrounded by your loved ones. During that sunny morning of the gender reveal session, nobody cared if they were photogenic, or if the way they laughed was unglamorous, but everything turned out beyond beautiful, because within those photographs laid the most honest feelings. It went beyond the way they dressed, or the props they prepared, because it was all about the people who sincerely shared their happiness, and the experience their hearts journeyed through. It's unforgettable, because all of us lived those moments with heart, with our truest selves."
Congratulations on your little baby girl, Sam and Brenda!
