A bridesmaid’s dress in the perfect dusky blue hue was all this couple needed to plan their dream wedding. With the help of GiGi of MY Wedding Planner, Kristian and Mellissa crafted a palette of cream and the same dusky blue, with speckles of gold and blush pink to accent the muted tones. Their elegant celebration was held at Marble 8, Kuala Lumpur and shot by Joshua of Inlight Photos.
How did you meet?
“Like any modern day romantic tale, we met through work! We've never had to work together directly, thank goodness, but our respective companies were working together on a project and that was how we met.” ~ Mel
How did he propose?
“Kristian planned a surprise getaway to The Datai in Langkawi after months of scheming behind my back with mutual friends to design and create the perfect engagement ring. Langkawi has always been a special place for us as we've been there numerous times together as a couple for quick weekend getaways, but I had no idea where we were going there until the day before (which felt terrible for a control freak like me).” ~ Mel
What was the theme of your wedding?
“The colour palette was dusky blue and cream with hints of gold and blush pink. It all started with this gorgeous bridesmaid’s dress in that dusky blue hue. I built a colour palette around it over beers with my maid of honour.” ~ Mel
How did you decorate your venues? Did you undertake any DIY projects?
“To be honest I've never been one for flowers, but after much protesting from multiple parties, we got Wishing Tree to do all the flowers and decorations. For the record, I still believe you can have a wedding without flowers!
There was a bit of DIY involved to make the door gifts, with the help of my maid of honour and sister, and that ended up being enough trouble as it is. I'm glad we didn't try to DIY anything else!” ~ Mel
What sort of wedding favours did you opt for, and why?
“After going through countless websites (and Pinterest) for the perfect favours, we couldn't find anything that we really liked. We decided to DIY it and combine three separate favours to give out to our guests: a test tube of hot chocolate mix, a small jar of Amazin' Graze granola, and candles.” ~ Mel
Do you have any other stories you’d like to share with us?
“I was packing all my things the day before the wedding, and I put the wedding bands (in their boxes) on my bed for two minutes while I turned around to pack some other things. When I turned back around, one box was missing. It took me about ten minutes to realise that our black pug had gotten hold of one of the boxes, and was quietly chewing on it in the corner of my room. Well, we ended up using the same box in the end, bite marks and all. Thankfully that was the biggest catastrophe we encountered!” ~ Mel
Any tips or wedding advice for other brides and grooms to-be?
“You can never plan enough, so get started very early on so you will know right away which vendors are available and which aren't - some vendors we contacted were already booked a year in advance! Secondly, know what to save on and what to spend on - if you don’t have a planner, an on-the-day wedding coordinator is worth the money because you really don't want your friends or family to be chasing hotel managers, bands or anyone else for that matter on the day itself.” ~ Mel
What do you think makes a strong marriage?
“Remembering that love is a choice - it's a conscious decision that you've made to embark on a journey together and it requires work!” ~ Mel
A word from GiGi Chua of MY Wedding Planner…
“Mel is one of the most cheerful and friendliest brides I've ever met. The planning process was a very pleasant experience; she would share her ideas and brainstorm with me. The theme of the wedding came about when when she found the perfect dusky blue shade for her bridesmaids’ dresses. From there, we were able to develop the concept and colour palette. Kris was very patient with Mel throughout the planning process and is always the gentleman, taking care of Mel and all the people around him.
It was truly our pleasure to be a part of Kris and Mel's wedding journey. It was a relatively cozy, intimate wedding filled with love from the couple's families as well as friends who have travelled from different countries to see them wed. We were able to witness the close relationship the couple has with both their families - Mel personally requested the live band to play this song entitled "???????" for her grandfather during the luncheon, and it really moved us. We're glad that the couple and their families enjoyed the wedding as much as they did.”
Congratulations on your marriage, Kristian and Mellissa! May it be every bit as beautiful as your wedding!
