Mervyn and Erika’s Socially Conscious Wedding at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore

Mervyn proposed to Erika while on holiday in the picturesque city of Salzburg, Austria. They flew to Cappadocia and Istanbul, Turkey for their pre-wedding shoot, which took place during sunrise as dozens of hot air balloons rose into the sky.

Their hotel ballroom wedding dinner reception and banquet, meanwhile, was held at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. Planned and styled by Spellbound Weddings and captured by Pixioo and Fresh From Kenneth, the ballroom was transformed into a floral wonderland, filled with white, blush pink, and lavender purple blooms.

To support social enterprises in Singapore, the couple decided to engage vendors like MINDS Bakers to prepare wedding favours, and Refresh Flowers to collect and re-purpose flowers after the wedding. Now that’s one meaningful celebration!

How did the two of you meet?
“We were studying in the same secondary school but hung out separately with the same group of friends. We reconnected in 2011 through the same group of mutual friends and everything just fell right into place.” ~ Mervyn and Erika

How did Mervyn propose?
“Mervyn proposed on 10 September 2016 when we were on a family trip to Europe. Initially, it was just a trip with Mervyn’s family, and my mum and aunt decided to join at the very last minute. Mervyn totally caught me off guard when he proposed to me on a boat ride in Salzburg, Austria in the presence of both our families on the lake. He even made a video with well-wishes from my friends. It was truly an unforgettable experience, and it is the sweetest thing that Mervyn has done for me by far.” ~ Erika

What was your wedding’s theme/style/colour palette?
“We gave Spellbound a budget and a short brief of what we wanted (whimsical, lavender and fairy lights) alongside with several supporting images from Pinterest.” ~ Mervyn and Erika

How did you decorate your venues? Did you undertake any DIY projects?
“We were pretty hands-off during the entire decor process as we had seen Spellbound’s work and we were confident that Spellbound would be able to bring the decor to life. True enough, Spellbound did not disappoint and even went above and beyond our expectations!” ~ Mervyn and Erika

What sort of wedding favors did you opt for, and why?
“From the start, we were certain that we’d want to use our wedding to give back to society in some way or another. We have always felt that there is a lot of wastage when it comes to celebrations, and many wedding favours tend to get left behind, unused and untouched. With this idea in mind, we decided to order delicious chocolate chip cookies from Minds Bakers as it is a social enterprise that empowers people with intellectual disabilities.

We also engaged Busybody Studios to do table-to-table photography shots so that our guests would have a physical photograph together with us and our families.” ~ Mervyn and Erika

Are there any special stories relating to your wedding?
“We had a rather large bridal party of 18 people, and half of them are actually our secondary school friends. On the wedding day, we went back to our secondary school for a photoshoot in the morning together with our bridal party.

We didn’t want the fresh flowers from the wedding celebration to go to waste, so we enlisted the help of Refresh Flowers, who collected the flowers after the dinner and repurposed them before gifting them to hospices/old folks homes. In light of this, Spellbound took the initiative to choose flowers that were easier to repurpose, and we are so glad to have had Spellbound’s support and assistance with all the logistics and handling arrangements.” ~ Mervyn and Erika

Any tips or wedding advice for other brides and grooms to-be?
“It’s always good to start planning early! Book your wedding venue first as popular venues tend to get booked out early on auspicious dates. It is also important to communicate with your partner so that your ideas are aligned. Lastly, take some time to enjoy the entire wedding planning process (be it the good, bad, or ugly) as this is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for the both of you.” ~ Mervyn and Erika

Any tips or advice you have on what makes a strong marriage?
“Always remember to choose your partner every day as marriage is a lifetime of adventures together.” ~ Mervyn and Erika

Congratulations on your marriage, Mervyn and Erika! May it be every bit as beautiful as your wedding!
