25-year-old Catriona Gray was crowned Miss Universe 2018 last December, and what set the internet on fire was the stunning evening gown she wore during the competition.
Of Filipino-Australian heritage, Catriona donned a sparkly crimson-red gown with a sexy thigh-high slit, which elicited screams and cheers from the audience as she sashayed down the runway. The genius behind the gown? None other than Filipino wedding dress designer Mak Tumang.
When we shared images of Mak Tumang's sensational wedding gowns in 2017, the article went viral, with brides all over the world swooning at his wonderfully intricate and feminine couture creations. It’s hardly a surprise, then, that he is also the designer of Catriona’s gorgeous gowns for the Miss Universe competition.
His inspiration for Catriona’s sizzling hot look? The Mayon volcano, said to be named after a mythological heroine, the “Daragang Magayon” (or beautiful lady) in Filipino folklore. One of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, it’s also located in Albay, a province that Catriona herself hails from.
In Mak Tumang’s own words: “Catriona can be considered as the modern-day Daragang Magayon. She embodies the Filipina’s beauty, intelligence and burning passion. This lady is definitely on fire! Watch her erupt right before your very eyes and let the lava of grace, goodness and hope flow.”
