Blogger bride-to-be Kyla Monique approached longtime friend and “It” Instagram photographer Daryl Aiden Yow to capture her dream pre-wedding shoot. Combining her twin loves for high fashion and “My Little Pony”, these images at Gallop Stable with a rescued racing horse are the fashion photographer’s first foray into weddings and they are both glamorous and whimsical - in our opinion, a reflection of the couple themselves.
How did you meet and what was the proposal like?
“It was my cousin's birthday party at the National Service Resort & Country Club (NSRCC) and Andrew, my fiancé, was one of her friends she had invited. At that time, I was still working as a VJ at Zouk and had to leave early, but of course I went back to the party after work when it started pouring and everyone decided to stay over. One thing led to another; we started talking and realised we have tons of mutual friends and had even been at the same occasions together but never really noticed each other (guess we are both equally oblivious). Andrew didn't know how to ask me for my number (or so he says), and the very next day, with no help from alcohol, he got my cousin to do the dirty work for him and the rest of it is history. I guess for me at least, I've always sort of believed in the whole fairytale romance of finding the right person and after 21 years, I finally had my first boyfriend and a few years later, he became my fiancé.
A little backstory: Every year we celebrate Christmas with both our families so I did not think anything would happen on the Christmas Eve of 2015. On a whim, we decided to get couple tattoos that afternoon from a tattoo parlour a few streets down from my mother's place and that same evening, he popped the question in front of his family members and my mother (after 12 cans of liquid courage, beer).” ~ Kyla
What was the inspiration behind your shoot?
“We wanted to do a cross between a high fashion and bridal shoot. I've been friends with Daryl Aiden for years and thought - who better to capture these moments than him? It was really easy to convey our ideas as he has a keen eye for detail and we could trust his judgment, like when he tells us to move a certain way, etc. This was his first venture into wedding photography from fashion, and he definitely nailed it.
As much as we knew the angles we wanted, the little girl in me wanted a horse to fulfil my obsession with ‘My Little Pony’. Thankfully we didn't have to go overseas to achieve this. The horses at Gallop Stables are actually rescued racing horses and Gallop Stables helps to get them adjusted to life after the races. Thankfully the horse we worked with was perfect and absolutely photogenic, which of course helped a lot!” ~ Kyla
Do you have any interesting moments or stories to share from the day of shooting?
“We knew we wanted to shoot outdoors but the weather forecast was definitely not on our side. On the first day of the shoot, we could hear roars of thunder threatening to rain on our parade! Nevertheless, we had to wait for the horse to have his 2-hour buffet spread before we finally got down to business, and thankfully the weather held up in the end. I guess that is one of the biggest hurdles for outdoor shoots and something we can't control.
We received lots of compliments on the pictures but what people do not know is what went on behind the scenes. The reality is there was slobber, mud and dirt EVERYWHERE.” ~ Kyla
