“No it wasn’t love at first sight but I found him really funny and entertaining. A random text and many bare-faced Skype conversations later, I realised how much I was drawn to his humorous antics and natural charm and we eventually got together. Years later he still never fails to make me laugh even when I’m mad at him (or maybe I just have a really low laughing point) and he is always around when I need him, unless Manchester United is playing that night.” ~ Xinyi
Russell was playing around with the idea of a destination marriage proposal in Bali but concerns about carrying an engagement ring on holiday lead him to propose in Singapore instead and he chose his venue wisely – an Ocean Suite at Resorts World Sentosa, tucked away on one side of the S.E.A. Aquarium, with an underwater view of over 40,000 marine fishes! How could Xinyi say anything but, “Yes”?
Please tell us a little bit about how you both got together and how did you know he/she was The ONE?
“We met through a mutual friend of ours back when we first started university.” ~ Russell
“The first time we met was through a university bash. A good friend of mine brought me along to attend the party with her group of friends and I met him there. No it wasn’t love at first sight but I found him really funny and entertaining. A random text and many bare faced Skype conversations later, I realised how much I was drawn to his humorous antics and natural charm and we eventually got together. Years later he still never fails to make me laugh even when I’m mad at him (or maybe I just have a really low laughing point) and he is always around when I need him, unless Manchester United is playing that night.” ~ Xinyi
When did you decide to propose and what planning was involved?
“I decided to propose quite a while back before the actual proposal itself (maybe almost a year before the proposal). I went looking on the internet quite a bit for inspiration and flirted with the idea of proposing overseas during our Bali trip. However the thought of having to worry about carrying around the ring while on holiday made me decide to do it here in Singapore. Once that was decided, I looked around for a venue that would be perfect for a private proposal and roped in my siblings who really did all the heavy lifting and prep work. They are really the best!” ~ Russell
Xinyi, was the proposal a complete surprise or did you have an inkling as to what Russell was planning? Could you please tell us a little bit about how you felt during the actual proposal?
“Even though I knew he was going to propose that year, it was still a successful surprise! His brother recently got married and he told me they had an extra suite for a staycaytion as part of their honeymoon gift from his bosses. Being gullible, I packed chips and PJs for a sleepover with his siblings. Up to the point of stepping into the suite and seeing the rose petals on the bed, I was still clueless and thought the hotel had really good service for a honeymoon suite. Only when I saw my face in the photos on the decorated wall, did it sink in that the proposal was happening. Everything after was quite a blur as I was stunned and overwhelmed that it was finally happening with the screen winding up to reveal the beautiful background of the aquarium with the “marry me” balloons. I did not hear a thing he said while he knelt down on one knee (which is why video footage is so important!) but I knew for sure I had to squeal a “yes!” to this not-usually-romantic man pulling off such a romantic proposal!” ~ Xinyi
Russell, how do you feel after the proposal and do you have any tips or advice for other couples planning to propose?
“I felt happy that I could still surprise her after we had been together for almost 6 years by then. Also seeing her genuine happiness come through made it all worth it. As for tips, I guess really try to understand what your significant other looks for in an ideal proposal. Some like it private, others like it public. Find one idea that works for both of you and don't try to do everything on your own. It really helps when you have people you can count on to be a part of this special occasion for the two of you.” ~ Russell
How did you find the ring?
“I shopped around to first understand rings because I knew nothing about them when I first started. I accompanied a friend to a jeweller when he was buying his engagement ring for his proposal and found their service really top notch. I decided to get mine from the same place as well a couple of weeks later.” ~ Russell
