Shaoyi, Thara and their planners from Ode To Joy Wedding Concepts rocketed their guests to a galaxy far, far away in this classy, Star Wars-themed celebration at St. Regis Singapore snapped by Jerome Goh Photography. With geeky details that shine rather than shout, we don’t need Jedi mind tricks to convince us that the Force is strong between these two lovebirds.
How did you meet?
“We first met as classmates in Junior College, and we were close friends and flat-mates for 3 years before he made the first move. I was his wingwoman in many situations, and he gave me countless advice on my past relationships, before we realized that we were searching for the wrong people at the wrong places the whole time.” ~ Thara
What was the proposal like?
“It was a surprise proposal in New York! It was early August, and Thara was in Manhattan for company training and I was preparing for my third year at SMU. When I found out about the impeccable timing window earlier in the year, I messaged a classmate we had in JC, who was studying in NYU, to help me set up the proposal. We scouted for locations and planned for my arrival. So when the time came, I scooted off on a plane, feigning the fact that I had some school activities to attend to over the week.
I landed on a Friday and scouted out the three possible places: Central Park, Rockefeller Centre and the Empire State Building. On Saturday, we settled on Belvedere Castle at Central Park and worked out the plan to lure Thara to the park at noon on Sunday. As Murphy’s law would have it, things didn’t quite go according to plan and there were several improvisations on the spot. In the end, I proposed in front of quite a large crowd that gathered while singing Elvis’s “Can’t help falling in love with you” during which, she gave me the “Are you kidding me” face which signalled the acceleration of the song and proposal. After the roaring cheers and joyful tears, we set off for a sumptuous lunch and looked forward to a exciting future.” ~ Shaoyi
What was your theme and colour palette?
“Right off the bat, we both wanted to have a Star Wars-themed reception, so the decision came really easily to go with navy and gold as our colour palette. We also feel that it is a classy and timeless colour combination, something that we will not regret in the future.” ~ Thara
How did you decorate your venue?
“As the theme was Star Wars, there were not many wedding-related items that we could get off the shelf. As such, we decided to DIY a few things to fit the theme, such as the cake toppers (bride and groom AT-ATs), and the groom’s and groomsmen’s boutonnieres with Lego Star Wars figurines. We also commissioned a friend to hand-craft Star Wars bead sprites as the wedding favours.” ~ Thara
Any tips or wedding advice for other brides and grooms to-be?
“Planning a wedding can be really stressful, especially if both parties have strong opposing ideas. It is therefore important to compromise and communicate with each other throughout the process. In addition, for the brides-to-be, don’t feel pressured into spending on branded items for the big day: expensive things are not always the most comfortable, or the most suitable for what you have in mind!” ~ Thara
Congratulations on your marriage, Shaoyi and Thara! May it be every bit as beautiful as your wedding!
