Singer-Songwriter Yuna and Adam's Tropical-Bohemian Malaysia Wedding at Janda Baik

We find each other annoying and make fun of each other all the time, but we love each other to bits!" ~ Yuna

Celebrity singer-songwriter Yuna and Adam Sinclair got engaged last year and recently celebrated their love in a cross-cultural Malay-English wedding in Malaysia, which included a henna night, nikah (solemnisation ceremony), and a western-style reception at Puncak Rimba amid the verdant jungles of Janda Baik. The besotted couple opted for a tropical-bohemian-themed wedding planned by The Calla, styled by Hatta Dolmat, and artfully captured by Weddings by Qay where, in perfect harmony with the tropical theme, they experienced a coincidental rainfall followed by a beautiful, misty evening!

How did you and Adam meet, and when did you realize he was The One?
"We met for the first time at a commercial shoot in 2013. Adam was the director, I was a talent. We hit it off and couldn't stop talking. When the commercial shoot was over, we went our separate ways. We remained friends but somehow lost contact for about 2 years. We dated different people at that time and when we both were single again, I reached out to him. We were living in two different countries but we decided to give our relationship a try, and we were together for 3 years before he proposed.

I knew that he was the one when he came to visit me in LA and loved the idea of moving out to LA with me. I realized that I didn't really want to be without him! I would miss him so much!

What was the proposal like?
"Adam proposed to me in February 2018 in Los Angeles. It was very private and sweet. It was not in a public space, there were no candles, no flowers, nothing over the top. It was just him, me, his words, and a beautiful ring because he knows I am not really into cheesy romantic things. We were able to just be ourselves, so it was perfect!" ~ Yuna

What was your theme and colour palette?
"I call it Tropical - Bohemian. There were tropical flowers, coconuts, a gamelan band, and our family members wore champagne and burgundy colours.

We wanted something that represented both of us. I’m Malay and I love Malay culture so I wanted a 'kampung' vibe with a tropical setting and a gamelan band. Adam is half English so we thought maybe we would do a simple western-style reception.

We hired a wonderful team - The Calla for decor, and YSA Events for the transparent tents. Both of them were very helpful, and so lovely. They understood that the venue was already so lush and green and worked with the venue so well." ~ Yuna

What sort of wedding favours did you opt for, and why?
"We went with woven tote bags, and in them were a batik printed fan, a copy of a prayer book, and cookies. The bags, made from recycled plastic, were from a company called Jari Indai. Woven bags are very Malay but at the same time I wanted something eco-friendly." ~ Yuna

What were some of the most memorable moments from your wedding?
"It rained on the day of our wedding and so we were delayed by 3 hours! The bridge that our guests had to cross was overflowing with the river because it had rained earlier, so people weren't able to cross over. We had to remain positive so to kill time, instead of stressing out, I just spent time talking to my U.S. friends. Luckily the rain stopped, and cars were able to cross the bridge again. We got married a little bit before sunset but the sky was so gloomy. I was hoping that we would get a nice sunset, but because it had rained earlier, we were blessed with misty weather and it was beautiful.

Our first dance was to “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton." ~ Yuna

Do you have any tips and wedding advice for other brides and grooms to-be?
"I think just plan a budget early. It helps a lot to know what you're willing to spend for things like flowers, décor, or catering. And don't rush to get married, Adam and I waited a couple of years into our relationship because we knew we wanted a beautiful wedding, and those years enabled us to save money! Remember that your wedding is yours, so enjoy the process and have fun! I had a wedding planning book so I wouldn't miss anything out or forget anything." ~ Yuna

What do you think makes a strong marriage?
"Understanding and respecting each other is so important. It's what makes our bond as husband and wife strong because we understand that we're both flawed but we're trying our best. And humour. You gotta make each other laugh!" ~ Yuna

Congratulations on your marriage, Yuna and Adam! May it be every bit as beautiful as your wedding!
