With the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel’s ‘Martinique’ banana palm wallpaper as inspiration, you can bet one’s wedding style will be on point. Nicholas and Skye’s destination celebration at The Istana, Bali planned by Lily Wedding Services and snapped by Terralogical, was a relaxed foliage and pineapple-accented affair. The day’s glam quotient went into overdrive however with the couple’s handpicked outfits of gold sequin gown by Jane Hill and the coolest palm print suit jacket by Godwin Charli.
How did you meet and what was the proposal like?
“Nick is originally from New South Wales and I am from Victoria. Nick met my sister while working in the USA and she introduced us when Nick came to visit Melbourne. It wasn’t exactly love at first sight but it was close! That was almost 13 years ago and we have been together ever since.
Nick proposed at our home on Christmas morning in 2012. He had wrapped the ring and hung it from the Christmas tree for me to find. When I unwrapped the ring he asked me to marry him. We were spending the rest of the day with family so it was really exciting to get to see everyone and spend the day celebrating.” ~ Skye
Please tell us more about your wedding!
The Bridal Outfit
“I always knew I didn’t want to wear a traditional white wedding dress and so when I first saw my dress in a photo online I knew that it was ‘The One’.” ~ Skye
Hair and Makeup
“I asked my makeup artist for a natural look. I don’t usually wear a lot of eye makeup so we made sure we kept the look simple with winged eyeliner and lots of lashes for a bit of glamour. I like wearing my hair down but due to the heat in Bali I opted for a half-up half-down style to keep my hair off my face.” ~ Skye
The Groom’s Outfit
“It was really important for Nick to be able to express his own sense of style and really go for something non-traditional on the day. He had no idea that my dress would be gold so it was really difficult for him to pick an outfit. However once we saw his palm print jacket we knew it was perfect.” ~ Skye
The Wedding Party’s Style
“I told my bridesmaids they could pick their own dresses as long as they were black. Luckily for me they all wanted to wear the same dress and it looked beautiful on all of them.
The groomsmen wore the same chino pants, shirts and shoes as Nick. We opted not to put them in ties or bowties to keep with the relaxed feel of the day.” ~ Skye
“A destination wedding was something we had always talked about doing, as we love to travel, and Bali is a very special place for Nick and I as we have holidayed there regularly over the years. When planning our wedding we knew we wanted to have a small and intimate wedding with our closest family and friends so having it in Bali made sense.
We were rather worried about picking a wedding venue without being able to see it first which is why we decided on The Istana – whilst it was slightly over our planned budget we could tell from photos and reviews that it was going to be a first class venue and it completely exceeded our expectations – the accommodation, the grounds, the incredible view and the amazing staff – it was 100% perfect. Our whole wedding came together in 6 months which we could never have done without the amazing work by our wedding Planner Sarche from Lily Wedding Services.” ~ Skye
Theme and Colour Palette
“The theme was tropical glamour, inspired by the banana palm Martinique wallpaper from the Beverly Hills Hotel. We were married under the most incredible arch made of tropical leaves and ferns, and had pineapples lining the aisle. For the reception we kept the tables bare of any fabric and had centerpieces with lots of tropical leaves, spashes of colourful flowers and pineapples. My mum and I also sewed napkins made from banana palm printed fabric. Lastly, the lighting was super important to me – I just had to have festoon lights as I love the ambience they bring to a space.” ~ Skye
“We wanted to keep the menu mostly Asian, with the focus on Indonesian cuisine, and opted for a banquet. For drinks we served beer and champagne as well as five signature cocktails which were a real hit!” ~ Skye
“We didn’t have a lot of specifications for our photographer, only that we wanted the photos to be candid and natural, and not staged or cheesy. We were completely blown away with the results – every moment on the day was captured perfectly (and weren't cheesy at all!)” ~ Skye
“The music was really really important to us and we gave a lot of thought to the songs we would play throughout the day.
The bridesmaids walked down the aisle to God Only Knows by the Beach Boys. I walked down the aisle to Crazy Love by Van Morrison, and once the wedding was over the bridal party walked out to You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall & Oats.
Our first dance was to Cinema by Jason Evigan. It was a beautiful song but was difficult to dance to so it turned out to be a bad choice!
A few years ago whilst on holiday in Bali I met an amazing singer on the beach in Seminyak. I got his details at the time and saved them as I knew I wanted him to play at our wedding – he agreed and we had him sing acoustically during the cocktail hour. He was fabulous.
We had a DJ for the reception and he was brilliant and really knew how to get the party going. Both of our families love the Rolling Stones so there was plenty of that, lots of old school R&B and all the classics. The dancefloor was packed all night which was all we could have ever wanted!” ~ Skye
“We gave our guests beer coolers which Nick had designed to look like our wedding invitations. We had them made in Bali before the wedding.” ~ Skye
Did you undertake any DIY projects?
“Yes – I hand-made the confetti, the place cards and table numbers. My mum and I also sewed all the napkins which were made of fabric printed with banana palms, to match the theme of the wedding.” ~ Skye
What are some of your favourite memories from the day?
“Our wedding truly was the best day of our lives!
We understood that asking people to travel overseas for our wedding was a big ask and were so grateful and amazed that so many of our family and friends were able to come. It was all we could have asked for; to be surrounded by our favourite people in the world to celebrate our wedding in beautiful Bali.
The ceremony was our favorite part of the day as we had both written our own vows and it was really special to read them to each other. I thought I was going to be a nervous wreck during the ceremony but it felt amazing and so right to be marrying Nick and I enjoyed every minute.
We had so much fun at the reception, with everyone hitting the dancefloor and dancing the night away. It rained the entire time and no one cared as it was so much fun! The drinks were flowing and the music was pumping and everyone had a great time, especially Nick and I.
After the wedding was over most guests stayed for a swim in the pool, a lot more drinks and lots of shenanigans. We got to bed just before sunrise!” ~ Skye
Do you have any tips and wedding advice for other brides and grooms-to-be?
“The best advice I could give a bride-to-be is to try to enjoy the process, as it will all be over before you know it.
Also, make sure you do what is right for you and your fiancé, because at the end of the day all that matters is that you end up married to each other and all of the small details simply don’t matter in the big picture!
And – hire a wedding planner!” ~ Skye
