Yeejie and Joey survived years of long distance relationship and finally tied the knot at The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur in a simple garden ceremony shot by Wefreeze Photography and planned by Sunny Days. The hotel grounds were decorated with vintage and travel-inspired pieces as well as a blush and blue circular arch that gave the celebration a contemporary rustic touch.
How did you meet?
“Joey and I met when we were in university. We played squash together and often hung out with a group of mutual friends. It wasn't a love at first sight; we only got together three years after we graduated.” ~ Yeejie
How did you propose?
“I proposed to Joey at Tanjong Jara Resort in Terengganu. With the help of the hotel staff, a romantic sunset dinner was set up on a rock by the beach. I played a song on the guitar, sang to her, and popped the question, much to her surprise. We enjoyed our scrumptious dinner under the stars, listening to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore.” ~ Yeejie
What was the theme of your wedding?
“We had a travel-themed wedding because we both love traveling the world immensely and since we had always been in a long distance relationship, we travelled a lot to see each other. The style of the décor was a little vintage rustic, and the color motifs we chose were blue and blush.” ~ Joey
How did you decorate your venues? Did you undertake any DIY projects?
“We engaged Sunny Days to decorate our garden ceremony as well as our dinner reception. Our DIY projects include our wedding website as well as the designs of our invitation card and paper fans.” ~ Joey
What sort of wedding favors did you opt for, and why?
“We opted to give out mini jars of hot chocolate simply because we both love chocolate very much.” ~ Joey
What are some of your favourite memories from your big day?
“One of my favourite memories would definitely be the father-daughter dance. We didn’t rehearse at all, but it turned out to be one of the best parts of our wedding. Another one of my favourite moments would be the surprise song and video from my husband. That was very touching.” ~ Joey
“Joey was so busy in the days leading up to our big day that she didn’t have the time to properly prepare her vows. Despite that, her impromptu vows were very touching and true to her heart... I knew then that I married the smartest woman in the world.” ~ Yeejie
Any tips or wedding advice for other brides and grooms-to-be?
“Having the right mindset is more important than meeting your expectations. There will be times when you hear not-so-positive comments that will demotivate you during the wedding planning process, and if you concern yourself too much with pleasing everyone, you will only feel stressed and want the wedding to be over as soon as possible. We advise struggling couples to think of your wedding as a party, so the process becomes one where you plan a special day for everyone not just to witness a march-in, but to enjoy the companionship of others and make them feel like they are a part of your big day.” ~ Yeejie and Joey
What do you think makes a strong marriage?
“Focus on the positives, and see the good of everything in the marriage. Always practice honesty, even when you feel ashamed of certain things that you may have done. Take the time to do the little things, surprise each other once in a while and never stop experiencing new adventures together as best friends and soul mates. Lastly, always be sincere about your love.” ~ Joey
“As a new husband, I would say ‘happy wife, happy life’. The wedding is a milestone, and not an outcome. Couples have to continue learning and working together to achieve happiness in the marriage. Guys, always remind yourselves that you are lucky to have forgiving and supportive wives. One of my favourite quotes is, ‘If you don't succeed at first, listen to your wife!’ ~ Yeejie
Congratulations on your marriage, Yeejie and Joey! May it be every bit as beautiful as your wedding!
