Yohan and Yuyu have wanderlust coursing through their veins, but no adventure will ever be greater than their journey of marriage which kicked off with their nuptials at Capella Singapore. With help from Denise of Hitched Weddings and Parties, this globetrotting pair brought their travel-themed wedding to life with oversized world map backdrops, marquee letters and vintage props snapped by Acapella Photography.
How did you meet?
“We met at the University of Sydney, Australia. It was not love at first sight, but we enjoyed talking to each other and eventually started dating.” ~ Yohan & Yuyu
What was the proposal like?
“Yohan proposed on our 5th year anniversary together as a couple at Fells Point, Baltimore, MD USA. I didn’t see it coming because I had completely forgotten that it was our anniversary day. The day went by as usual, he picked me up from work, but instead of walking home, we went to a historical hotel. He had done this before so I wasn’t suspicious.
After checking in, my dress was already there. I changed and was hungry as we were having a late dinner. Yohan kept pointing to a chair next to a red door, but I only saw his big black bag sitting there. Apparently, there was also a small box inside the bag, which he then took out and went down on his knee and said, “Will you marry me?” My first response was, “Are you sure… here?” I accepted the ring but didn’t give a definite yes. We had a very nice dinner and while we were walking back to the hotel, I asked him what the ring meant. He answered, “It means my love that is strong, pure and forever.” My second response that night was, “Yes.” ~ Yuyu
What was your theme and colour palette for the wedding?
“The theme was adventure and vintage. Our colour scheme was peach, green and white. We included elements such as world maps, compass motifs and succulent plants for a rustic feel.” ~ Yohan & Yuyu
How did you decorate your venue?
“We used my favourite colour combination of coral, green and white as the main colour theme. The world map became our main feature. There was a photo wall for guests to pen their wishes, and doubled up as a backdrop for photos. The lighted “I DO” letters next to it also became a popular backdrop for guests to get creative with their photo taking. Our pre-wedding photos were displayed together with vintage props such as trunks, a typewriter and camera. The stage in the ballroom was set up with a big world map and light bulbs that created a fun and vintage feel which is what we were looking for. I still remember my brother coming up to us and thanking us for “making it happen” after he saw the backdrop.” ~ Yuyu
Do you have any tips or wedding advice you’d like to share with other brides and grooms to-be?
“Making the theme something that you both value will make the event more meaningful. Both of us share a passion for travelling, we hope to see the whole world. Hence, the world map and compass motifs were the highlights for the day. Hiring a wedding planner made it a lot easier to see this vision through. As for the rest, we just picked what we love and had a lot of help from our family members.” ~ Yohan & Yuyu
Congratulations on your marriage, Yohan and Yuyu! May it be every bit as beautiful as your wedding!
