Kevin and Kelly tied the knot in a vibrant affair of pinwheels and DIY papercraft styled by Wonderland for Detailed Planners, held at Shangri-la Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa and shot by AndroidsinBoots. Nixing a traditional ballroom reception for a more casual dinner setting by the beach, the couple celebrated their nuptials under a sea of colourful, bright lanterns.
How did you meet?
“We meet in church during a young adults’ service.” ~ Kevin
How did you propose?
“I booked a suite at Shangri-La Sydney with the view of the harbour and the bridge. She wasn't expecting an overseas proposal so that’s why I decided to plan one. I coordinated with the hotel to arrange for 50 white helium balloons and rose petals to be sent up to the room. While she was in the shower, I set up fairy lights around the rose petals and attached small printed photos of us on the strings of the floating balloons. When she finished, I brought her out and popped the question.” ~ Kevin
What was the theme of your wedding?
“We knew that we didn't want a wedding dinner in a ballroom setting. We wanted this special occasion to be an extension of our personalities and our relationship, hence we decided to hold our wedding dinner and ceremony outdoors. We wanted it to be a fun and slightly more casual, relaxed affair. By hosting it outdoors, we were able to decorate the place with fairy lights, tassels and pinwheels, turning it from a blank canvas into one pretty, magical venue.” ~ Kelly
How did you decorate your venue? Did you undertake any DIY projects?
“Pinwheels were a key feature of our wedding and Kevin painstakingly made the majority of them for the wedding. We made tassels too, and once again he made the majority of them! As it was an outdoor wedding, we decided to give it a special touch by placing fairy lights and paper lanterns in our chosen colours. We were quite the team, with me coming up with the vision and him executing it. (laughs)
I came up with the design for the invitation cards and balloon invites, as well as the programme booklet, the label for the wedding favours and the clay ring plate for the ceremony. We decided to have a time capsule instead of a guestbook at our wedding, so I prepared cards with headers such as ‘A Doodle Just for You Two’, ‘A Note of Love’, ‘A Piece of Advice’ and ‘This Time Next Year...’ to help guests craft their congratulatory messages to us. We thought it would be something fun for our guests to do, especially for the doodlers and jokesters in the crowd.” ~ Kelly
What wedding favours did you opt for?
“We didn't want the run-of-the-mill favours so we opted to get teabags wrapped in burlap. I added customised labels for that personal touch!” ~ Kelly
Do you have any interesting stories to share with us?
“I honestly didn't think we would end up together because when we first met at the young adults' service, I didn't see him as a potential partner. What’s more, he had seen me cry uncontrollably at various occasions and probably thought I was trouble. But I'm glad that we started talking after a group outing to catch a movie and the rest was history.” ~ Kelly
Any tips or wedding planning advice for other brides and grooms-to-be?
“Planning a wedding is one of the more stressful things a couple undertakes together. As much as you would want to go through the nitty-gritty details of the planning process, I found it helpful to still make time for date nights that were free from wedding-related conversations, allowing us to simply enjoy each other's company (since we're going to be in it for life!).
Friends are always more than willing to help out if you ask, so if your wedding involves tons of DIY/craft-related activities, organise craft-making sessions. Prepare some snacks or refreshments so it becomes a fun way to spend time with your friends and get stuff done for the wedding as well.” ~ Kelly
Congratulations on your marriage, Kevin and Kelly! May it be every bit as beautiful as your wedding!
